On Thursday, Sept. 22, the ladies of Seeds of Strength met for lunch, some 223 strong. It was quite a jump from those original thirteen ladies that met in 2009 to form the group that would eventually change the world as we know it here in Georgetown. Those women had an idea that they believed would make a difference, and the attendees at the 8th annual luncheon demonstrated just how right they were.

As always, the tables were beautifully set – thanks to the handwork of the citizens of Brookwood in Georgetown, our beloved BIG. Mona Anderson, of Tastefully Yours, outdid herself once again with a wonderful meal and a scrumptious dessert.

With the introduction of the incoming Guiding Circle officers and committee chairs, and the wonderful skit by Barbara Garland and Saundra Nichols-Liveris, it was evident that Seeds of Strength is in for a fun year ahead.

The presentation shared by Dr. Melissa Byrnes, History Professor at Southwestern University, was the highlight of the afternoon. Dr. Byrnes spoke about the classes she teaches at SU on philanthropy. Her description of philanthropy as a form of loving that creates a partnership at the highest level rings so true with this group, and it left a lasting impression on us all. She explained that to be giving means to be democratic, empowering and subversive – challenging tradition and removing obstacles. She concluded by questioning the audience about how they are being subversive – what a great way to look at our legacy of giving!

From the opening remarks by SoS Outgoing Chair Pat Donica to her original quote to close the meeting, the SoS family was treated to lots of good news while enjoying the fellowship of the group. It was indeed an uplifting and productive afternoon for all.
