BOYS & GIRLS CLUB
Boys and Girls Club has $20,000 for their “Get Tech” program
“The Boys & Girls Club has been implementing its Triple Play program throughout the year. Every Monday, all club members who want to utilize the computer room have to take part in our Daily Challenge of the Week. Some weeks this has been a group game, while other days it has been individual physical challenges such as jump roping or relay races. Our Nutrition Programming has been provided by both Capital Area Food Bank of Austin Staff and Williamson County Health Department Staff. One example of this was when Wilco County Staff presented information on the consumption of sugary drinks made all the more effective by showing children how much sugar went into certain drinks. (Quite the eye opener!) Club Staff have also been implementing a healthy Snack Club” that has included tried and tested favorites such as “ants on a log” and fruit salad. Our Character in the Club program has been centering on Search Institutes 40 Developmental Asset Program during which different “assets” are selected and discussed. One example centered on drawing someone who participants looked up to and who they felt supported them. Another activity was centered on self-esteem where each child filled out their own certificate of something that they were proud of accomplishing. At the Park Lane site, participants recently wrote down goals and dreams, placed them in a time capsule, and buried them so it could be dug up in the future…….Hopefully we will be at Park Lane for years to come!”
